Going For the Small Business Gold With AI

Writer: Joy MoralesJoy Morales

Last week the 33rd Olympics kicked off and since we only get to see it every few years let’s spend some time and look at one of the few events that truly brings countries together.

It Was All Greek Males to Them

The origins of the Olympics can be traced back to the ancient Olympic Games which began in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece. The games started as part of a religious festival honoring the god Zeus.

Initially, the Games featured a single event, a 192-meter footrace called the stade. Over time, more events were added, including wrestling, boxing, chariot racing, and the pentathlon. The original pentathlon included the stade, as well as javelin and discuss throwing, the long jump and wrestling.

These events were designed to showcase the versatility and overall athletic prowess of the athletes, exemplifying the perfect Greek male.

Originally, only freeborn male citizens of Greece could compete. Women were not allowed to participate or even attend the games, maybe this could be called the first male bonding experience.

Like today, the Games were held every four years, a period known as an Olympiad.

The ancient Olympics continued until around 393 A.D. when they were abolished by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I as part of his efforts to promote Christianity.

The Marathon Effort to Bring It Back

The idea for the modern Olympic Games began to take shape in the mid-19th century.

Dr. William Penny Brookes, an English physician, played a significant role in this revival. In 1850, he started the Wenlock Olympian Games in Much Wenlock, England, to promote physical education and exercise.

These local games inspired Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, who later founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894.

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. There were 241 athletes from 14 nations competing in 43 events. This marked the beginning of the global sporting event we know today.

Playing In the Snow

Since those initial games the modern Olympics have grown significantly, with thousands of athletes from around the world competing in a wide variety of sports.

Soon after the Winter Olympics were introduced in 1924, featuring sports like skiing, ice skating, ice hockey and luge.

In 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympics have been held separately and alternately are held every two years.

Gold, Glory, and Geopolitics

Each Olympics is unique and provides new moments in history, but some of them stand out more than others.

Maybe the first politically controversial Olympics was held in 1936 in Berlin, Germany at the height of the Nazi Party. At the time Adolph Hitler promoted the idea of Aryan supremacy only to have American hero Jesse Owens win four gold medals, shattering that idea.

The London Games in 1948 featured the first broadcast of Olympic events on the BBC. In 1964, the Tokyo games became the first international broadcast of the Olympics and showcased Japan’s post-war recovery and technological advancement.

Today, NBC has secured the U.S. broadcast rights for the Olympics through 2032 in a deal valued at $7.75 billion and covers this and the next four Summer and Winter Olympics.

Politics again took center stage in the next two Olympics. The Mexico City games of 1968 featured the civil rights protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos as they raised their fists in a Black Power salute during the medal ceremony, making a powerful statement for civil rights.

Tragedy hit the Munich Games of 1972 by a terrorist attack that led to the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches.

The 1980s games were a Cold War show down as The United States led a boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Joined by over 60 countries, it significantly reduced the number of participating nations.

In retaliation, the Soviet Union and 14 of its allies boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, citing security concerns and accusing the US of anti-Soviet hysteria.

Fortunately, 1988 saw a thawing of the Cold War and back to near full participation and who could forget the excitement of the Barcelona Games of 1992 which featured The Dream Team and the exploits of NBA Hall of Famers such as Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and of course, the great Michael Jordan.

From ancient Greece to modern global spectacles, the Olympic Games have always embodied the spirit of excellence, perseverance, and fierce competition. These same qualities are essential in the world of small business.

Just as athletes strive for gold medals, entrepreneurs aim for market success. And in today's fast-paced business environment, both Olympians and small business owners are turning to cutting-edge tools and strategies to gain a competitive edge. For many small businesses, that edge increasingly comes from AI.

AI: The Gold Medal Standard

For a small business today, trying to find the right solutions to succeed is no game. Many are turning to AI to become their gold medal standard of efficiency.

The Olympic Games and small businesses might seem worlds apart, but they share surprising similarities.

Both require dedication, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Just as athletes train tirelessly for their moment on the world stage, entrepreneurs work countless hours to build their dreams into reality.

Competition is fierce in both arenas. Olympians face the world's best in their sport, while small businesses contend with established corporations and innovative startups. Both must constantly adapt to changing conditions, whether it's a sudden shift in market trends or an unexpected move by a competitor.

Moreover, success in the Olympics and in business isn't just about individual performance. Behind every athlete is a team of coaches, trainers, and supporters. Similarly, successful small businesses rely on a network of employees, mentors, and partners.

So how can small businesses channel this Olympic spirit? Here are four key strategies:

Set Clear, Ambitious Goals: Like Olympians targeting specific medals, establish clear, measurable objectives for your business. Create reasonable goals to guide your efforts. AI can analyze data to help identify precise areas for improvement and track progress in real-time. For example, AI-powered analytics tools can examine your sales data, customer behavior, and market trends to suggest realistic revenue targets or customer acquisition goals.

Invest in Continuous Training: Just as athletes never stop training, commit to ongoing learning and development. AI-powered learning platforms can provide personalized training recommendations, adapting in real-time to ensure effective skill development. These platforms might use algorithms to identify skill gaps in your team, then suggest tailored online courses or workshops to address those gaps efficiently.

Build a Strong Support Team: Assemble your business "dream team" by hiring complementary talent. AI can assist in identifying ideal team compositions and streamline the talent acquisition process. For instance, AI-driven recruitment tools can scan resumes, conduct initial candidate screenings, and even predict job performance based on data from successful employees in similar roles.

Embrace Resilience: Learn from setbacks, just as athletes do from losses. Be prepared to adapt your strategy in response to challenges. AI predictive models can forecast potential challenges, allowing businesses to proactively adapt their strategies. This might involve using machine learning algorithms to analyze market data and predict upcoming trends or challenges, giving you time to prepare and adjust your business strategy accordingly.

By adopting these Olympic-inspired, AI-enhanced strategies, small businesses can strive for gold-medal performance in their own competitive arenas.
