Let’s Scare Up Some AI Traditions

As time goes on, holiday traditions seem to evolve with each generation. Take Halloween for example. Emerging from pagan harvest celebrations, it has transformed dramatically over the centuries.

Halloween originated with the Celtic festival Samhain when it was believed spirits crossed into our world. To protect themselves, Celts lit bonfires and wore costumes. They left food offerings to appease restless souls and prevent tricks.

As the Roman Empire expanded, festivals like Feralia and Pomona blended with Samhain. Feralia honored the dead, while Pomona thanked the gods for abundant harvests. Both involved leaving tributes for spirits and dressing up. Carved vegetable lanterns also became a popular tradition.

When Christianity spread through Europe, the church replaced pagan festivals with All Hallows’ Eve on October 31st, the night before All Saints’ Day. As European immigrants came to America in the 1800s, their Halloween traditions evolved. Turnips became pumpkins for carving jack-o-lanterns. Candy corn and haunted houses were introduced.

Today, Halloween is celebrated globally with diverse cultural traditions:

Japan's Kawasaki Parade showcases elaborate costumes for huge crowds. While in Spain "huesos de santo" desserts are shared on Halloween, followed by grave visits on All Saints' Day. Closer to home, Mexico's Dia de los Muertos honors deceased loved ones through altars, meals and decorated skulls.

Halloween has transformed from fearful superstition to commercialized fun. Like Halloween, another tradition experiencing major change is business operations. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transitioning from research labs to widespread adoption.

Much as costumes and traditions have evolved over time, AI applications have expanded enormously since the early research lab days. Once narrowly used in technical fields, AI now drives business success across industries.

Marketing teams rely heavily on AI-driven analytics to optimize campaigns and customer experiences. By leveraging data and predictive modeling, marketing efforts can become more targeted and effective.

Supply chain operations also leverage AI automation to reduce costs substantially. In some manufacturing business cases, AI solutions have reduced supply chain costs by up to 90%. Customer service and support functions have been transformed by AI as well. In 2020, over 8 billion customer queries were handled by AI chatbots. These chatbots often outperform their human counterparts in accuracy and efficiency when armed with the right data.

The possibilities of AI are truly endless and span every business function. It has become as essential to modern business as earlier technologies like the computer or internet. Companies that fail to effectively utilize AI open themselves up to major competitive threats. But for businesses ready to embrace AI's potential, the benefits are plentiful, from enhanced insights to optimized processes to delighted customers.
