Global Ghosts: How Traditions and AI Are Transforming Our World

Walk down any street in the United States in October, and you will see just how much we love Halloween. From traditional jack-o'-lanterns to blow-ups and 30-foot skeletons, this spooky holiday is truly an American favorite. But the world is catching up as our world seemingly gets smaller and smaller. AI is also helping us become a global community. AI solutions can help all small businesses no matter the location, and there are even tools that help us bridge the gap in communication.

So, join us on our journey honoring the spooky and scary throughout the rest of the world as we explore the frightful in other cultures and how AI can help us all.

The Hungry Ghost Festival

In China, Halloween isn't celebrated in the same way as in the West. Instead, they have the Hungry Ghost Festival, which takes place in the seventh lunar month, usually from early August to early September. During this time, families honor their deceased ancestors by offering food and burning incense. The belief is that the gates of the afterlife open, and spirits roam the earth.

Back here in the U.S., AI can help our small businesses by analyzing customer data to offer personalized experiences, much like how families honor their ancestors with specific offerings. As Marc Benioff from Salesforce puts it, "Artificial intelligence and generative AI may be the most important technology of any lifetime."

Obon Festival

Each year, the Japanese celebrate the Obon Festival to honor the spirits of ancestors. Families clean their homes and visit graves to pay their respects. Lanterns are hung to guide the spirits back to the world of the living. Tradition holds that the dead are welcomed back to finish what they could not in their mortal life.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to find out that AI can assist small businesses in the U.S. by automating routine tasks so you can finish them more efficiently. With AI’s assistance, you can focus on more meaningful activities. As we know, the true doorway to breakthrough is time, and with more time, we are able to be more innovative. As Fei-Fei Li, an AI expert, says, "AI is not a magician; it's a tool. It is a tool for amplifying innovation."

Great Britain Traditions

Many of the traditions that we hold near and dear come from Great Britain. For example, the jack-o'-lantern comes from Ireland and Samhain festivals, celebrating the change into winter and honoring the dead. Our traditions for trick-or-treating can be traced back to Scotland and England, where dressing up and asking for treats was customary. But nothing compares to a post-Halloween English celebration called Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night, celebrated on November 5th. This event commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot with bonfires, fireworks, and effigies of Guy Fawkes. Think of it like our Fourth of July and Halloween celebrations getting together and having a child.

Here in the “colonies,” AI can help small businesses by providing insights into market trends and helping them stay competitive. Paul Daugherty from Accenture notes, "The playing field is poised to become a lot more competitive, and businesses that don't deploy AI and data to help them innovate in everything they do will be at a disadvantage."

Día de los Muertos

Finally, in Mexico, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a vibrant celebration from October 31st to November 2nd. Families create altars with photos, candles, and offerings to honor deceased loved ones. The streets come alive with food, parades, music, and colorful decorations.

Like the calaveras, the vibrant and intricate decorations used to honor and remember deceased loved ones, AI can help small businesses in the U.S. by enhancing customer service and creating personalized marketing campaigns. Just as this traditional celebration thrives in its heritage and innovation, AI has the potential to unleash a new era of human creativity. As Elon Musk once said, "Generative AI is the most powerful tool for creativity that has ever been created. It has the potential to unleash a new era of human innovation."

Turning To Traditions

By understanding and appreciating these diverse traditions, small businesses can find inspiration in how they approach their operations and customer interactions. AI can be a powerful tool to help them innovate, stay competitive, and create meaningful connections with their customers. Traditions like these help us face our fears, and as AI solutions become more common, businesses that once feared the future can now look at it with much more optimism.
