How AI is Redefining Luck for Small Businesses

Luck is a curious thing.

Take for example, you suffer a minor car accident, you consider yourself unlucky. Within minutes of your collision, you see a multi car accident, and now you consider yourself lucky because you were delayed by the inconvenient fender bender.

Throughout our history we have looked on those that are lucky with reverence and those that have had something unfortunate happen to them as cursed.

Humans have sought to understand and influence the mysterious forces of luck and misfortune. From ancient mythologies to modern superstitions, the concept of luck has played a significant role in shaping our beliefs and behaviors.

Luck Be a Lady Tonight

In Greek mythology, the goddess Tyche was the personification of fortune, chance, and luck. She was often depicted holding a cornucopia, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. The Romans adopted Tyche as their goddess Fortuna (where we get the word fortune from), who was believed to bestow good or bad luck upon individuals.

In Judeo-Christian tradition, the concept of luck is often tied to divine providence.

The Bible contains numerous references to God's favor and blessings, as well as the consequences of disobedience and sin. The story of Job, for example, explores the idea of misfortune and the human struggle to understand the reasons behind it.

In the end, Job's faith is rewarded, and his fortunes are restored, illustrating the belief that God ultimately controls the fate of individuals.

Irish folklore is rich with tales of luck, both good and bad. According to legend, leprechauns are skilled craftsmen who make shoes for other fairies. They are known for their trickery and for hoarding pots of gold at the end of rainbows. It is said that if you catch a leprechaun, he must grant you three wishes in exchange for his freedom or reveal his pot of gold, depending on the story. However, leprechauns are notoriously clever and often find ways to outwit those who try to capture them.

A Piece of Luck

Another lucky tradition from the Emerald Isle is the four-leaf clover. In Irish tradition, each leaf of a clover represents a different attribute: faith, hope, love, and luck. Finding a four-leaf clover is considered exceptionally lucky, as they are rare, with only about one in 10,000 clovers having four leaves. According to one legend, when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, Eve carried a four-leaf clover with her as a reminder of the paradise she left behind.

Throughout history, people have sought to attract good luck and ward off misfortune through the use of other charms and talismans.

Take the lucky rabbit's foot, that is for everyone but the rabbit, for example. The origin of this superstition is unclear, but it may have roots in African American folklore or European traditions. It is believed that carrying a rabbit's foot, particularly the left hind foot of a rabbit caught under specific circumstances, can bring good luck and protect against evil.

The horseshoe is another common symbol of luck, often hung above doorways to attract good fortune and repel bad luck. This superstition may have originated from the belief that iron has the power to ward off evil spirits. In some traditions, the horseshoe should be hung with the ends pointing upward to collect and retain good luck, but placing the horseshoe the opposite way the luck, of course, runs out.

My Lucky Number Is…

Not all legends surrounding luck are positive, however. The superstition of Friday the 13th being an unlucky day has become widely recognized in Western culture. The exact origins of this belief are debated, but it may have ties to Christian tradition, as Jesus was crucified on a Friday, and there were 13 individuals present at the Last Supper.

The belief in lucky and unlucky numbers is also prevalent in many cultures. In Chinese tradition, the number 8 is considered lucky due to its pronunciation, which sounds similar to the word for "prosperity." Conversely, the number 4 is often avoided, as it sounds like the word for "death." In Western culture, the number 7 is often seen as lucky, possibly due to its significance in biblical numerology.

Let AI Bring You Luck

The Roman philosopher Seneca once wrote, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity," emphasizing the idea that luck is not entirely random but can be influenced by one's actions.

Today that saying probably resonates most with small businesses, especially when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is quickly becoming the difference between the lucky businesses that are thriving in these unusual economic times and the ones that are seemingly unlucky.

Take for example, your business location.

In the past you would take days, if not weeks, to scout out a location. You would watch and see the traffic possibly, do some leg work around the area to see what kind of competition is nearby.

Today, AI does that for you, and it is all done in just minutes.

AI has tools to show you the traffic flow in the area, diagnose businesses that can help or hurt your business in the same zip code.

AI can also find those unforeseen items, like upcoming road work for example, that could affect traffic flow.
